Everyday a star is born. But only some shine as bright as Tashi, the new and fresh R&B/Pop sensation, who can act, dance and spit a hot 16 bars if pressed. Hailing from Queens, New York the 17- year- old

Tashi set out for a singing career at just four years old. Her first break was as a principle in Puffy’s “We'll Always Love Big Poppa" music video. Shortly after, she launched a successful career in modeling when she was signed to Ford Models New York. Her face was seen all over the country on runways for Barbie, Mattel, and Nike and in print ads for stores like Macys, Kmart, and Target.

Modeling didn’t require a voice, so Tashi sought out acting and singing gigs. Her first professional acting job was on the daytime soap opera, “One Life To Live.” Shortly after, she landed a commercial for Hershey’s Chocolate which led to an invite from The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) to join the organization. What followed next was a string of appearances, both on and off screen. Some of those appearances were The American Girl Revue, Spike Lee’s Miracle’s Boys, Above The Influence commercials and coming to theatre’s in 2011 Tashi will be featured in an upcoming film Gun Hill Road by Rashaad Ernesto Green.

While acting sometimes afforded her the opportunity to sing, it alone wasn’t enough. In between commercials, PSAs and small parts in independent films, Tashi continued to sing and practice with a vocal coach. In 2007, she was selected to compete in a singing competition which aired overseas. This experience landed her in places like Korea, Paris, Africa and London.

“I love to entertain people. It just feels right when I’m on stage,” the soft spoken beauty says. And it shows. Tashi oozes with confidence, belts notes most pop stars wouldn’t even try in the shower, and dances with such ease (and precision) when she’s live on stage. And when she smiles, it’s almost blinding. THE MIXTAPE REPORT 12.12.10: Talib Kweli, B.o.B., Gangsta Boo, Lola Monroe, Diddy Dirty Money, TF Mafia

Talib Kweli (@RealTalibKweli), is back with a new mixtape, "Year of the Blacksmith (The Community)". Mixed by Mick Boogie (@MickBoogie), Talib plays the feature and sometimes just the host role on many of the tracks, allowing members of his new Blacksmith Music some shine. Jean Grae (@JeanGreasy) has been an underground staple for years, a female MC with a soft, cool voice, complimented by sharp, witty rhymes. "The Bridge" is a downtempo track perfect for the bedroom, but deserving of a few listens to fully grasp Grae's intricate punchlines. Strong Arm Steady's LP "In Search of Stoney Jackson" was considered by many as one of the most slept on hip-hop records in 2010, and he comes through with probably the most radio-ready track on the tape, "Make Me Feel". A true west coast joint complete with plunky synths and a classic crooner hook. Kweli and Boogie play with a lot of different sounds on this one, taking the idea of "Conscious Rap" to a new heights in terms of both creativity and mainstream appeal. With 31 tracks, there is just too much good music to mention here, but expect to hear a lot more from this crew; Talib mentions full-lengths from himself, Grae, and SAS in 2011...

B.o.B.'s (@bobatl) appropriately titled "No Genre" once again finds the southern rapper mingling Dirty South rap, dance-ready pop, and elements of synth and piano-driven rock. Bobby sets off the tape with a few straight rap bangers, but by track four we see the mood switch to T.I. singing over restrained strings and pianos. "Higher" shows B.o.B.'s obvious Outkast infleunce, with it's double time flow and pots and pans percussion, but goes for a radio-friendly, reggae-tinged chorus. "Shoot Up The Station" and "Not Lost" touch on elements of pop/rock, and "Game Time" comes with a beat that's a big synth and house 4/4 away from a Lady Gaga track. Bobby Ray never forgets his roots as a southern slang spitter, but isn't afraid to incorporate the mainstream either...

Aside from Jean Grae holding down the underground, a couple of other female artists came through this past week. Gangsta Boo (@GangstaBooQOM), formerly of Three 6 Mafia fame, dropped "Miss Dot Com" with DJ Fletch (@DJFLETCHDALLAS) and Drum Squad. Miss Mimi is a big fan of the southern rapper, and if you're into the "trap music" sound with club appeal, this is the tape to cop. However, the genre doesn't really lend itself to ingenuity, and leaves Boo lost in a sea of 808s, pitched hi hats, and rap cliches. Gucci Mane makes an appearance, along with an interlude shout out from Yelawolf (where's the verse?). Standouts are the club-ready "Booty Switch" , and "Theme Park", a song that the track list says "features" Lil Wayne, but in fact "features a sample of" the popular rapper. It also features an empty 16-bar verse at the end of the song; I'm not sure if it was purposely left out for fans to create their own remix, but that's a first for me. Minus the regular, three times louder than the tracks drops, DJ Fletch is MIA throughout, and the 1:30 of instrumental at the end of "Theme Park" is a testament to the effort put into making this tape. I respect Gangsta Boo for putting in work and staying in the game this long (don't come at me with "you're a hater" talk), but musically, I'm not really feeling it...

On the other hand, Lola Monroe (@Thee_LolaMonroe), as DJ Holiday (@Djholiday) puts it on the opening song of "Boss Bitch's World 2", "is gonna show you how to do it the right way". The former model/actress turned rapper keeps it real on remixes of Kanye West's "Power" (featuring Teirra Marie), Officer Ricky's "BMF", Gucci Mane's "Lemonade", and Lil Wayne's "Drop the World"; all excellent choices to show her versatility and ability to stand up to the heavy hitters in the game. However, the big remix goes back into the crates a bit, pulling out the classic Method Man and Mary J. Blige collaboration, "All I Need", flipping it to a females point of view. It's just one verse, but it shows Monroe's appreciation of real hip-hop and what came before her, and she makes it her own. "Overtime" (featuring Trina) goes hard, and "Gechur Haters" is Lola's demo to get on Swizz Beats' next club banger. Musically, Lola Monroe and Gangsta Boo are not all that different; but Lola comes with a fire and genuine flavor that takes you from Pinky to Nicki status with the quickness...

Diddy (@iamdiddy) and his backup singers, Dirty Money (@DIRTYMONEYCREW), dropped "Last Train to Paris" this past Tuesday, and put out this "Prelude" mixtape a few days prior. Now I give a lot of sh*t for not staying to true to the game and the art form, and give a lot of credit for creativity and innovation, so this record has me torn. On one hand, THIS IS IN NO WAY A HIP-HOP RECORD. Having Lil Wayne on a track does not make you hip-hop (See: Miley Cyrus, Madonna), nor does the standard hype-man ad-libbing from Diddy a la classic Biggie tracks. The days of "Who Shot Ya" and even "D.I.D.D.Y." are long gone. However, this tape, and the LP that followed it, is incredibly inventive and new. It's made for the club, an expensive club... hell, I'd go as far to say it's made for an expensive club in the year 2030. Layers of percussion are draped with weird, atonal synths, all set over a thumping house tempo. Diddy gets auto-tuned, and Dirty Money plays their role as super-chic R&B fembots. If you're a hip-hop purist, this will most likely make you vomit. I happen to love the art, but I also understand an artists desire to try something new. For what it's worth, Diddy is authentic on this one, making the music he hears, not what the market tells him to...

Finally, TF Mafia's (@TFMafia) "Foot on the Pedal" has been out for a minute, and Mimi had the opportunity to interview them on the show. Along with DJ Self (@djself), the Queens rap group enlist the likes of Bun B, Max B, and Papoose. Production is tight throughout, and rhymes stay aggressive in true Queens style, reminiscent of The Firm and G-Unit crews. It's a good introduction to the crew and good one to cop for anyone into NYC street rap. THE MIXTAPE REPORT 12.5.10: Redman, Trey Songz, Raheem DeVaughn, Fred The Godson, Yahzilla... The Movie

Redman (@therealredman) is back to his usual antics with his new tape "Pancakes and Syrup". To back his signature punchline heavy flow, The Funk Doc employs many of the sounds that made him famous; from the chilled out Heath Brothers sample most recognizably used in Nas' "One Love" on "Soopaman Syrup", to the G-Funk bounce on "I'm Sick" (featuring underrated singer/MC Saukrates), to the plunky guitars and throwback features on "Live 4 The Funk" (featuring Biggie Smalls and Nate Dogg. You heard me...). However, what's getting a lot of hype is the use of something that has made some artists careers in the past decade, and made fools of others: Auto-Tune. Some have criticized him for pandering to the younger audience, or selling out the art, but I see it as classic Red; a jokester first, MC second. The playful use of the modern vocoder works surprisingly well on his voice, and it's used sparingly to accentuate certain key word and phrases. The Brick City vet admits "we never take it too serious", and if you do, you don't know what Redman is all about...

Trey Songz (@TreySongz) dropped the Twitter reference-laden "#lemmeholdatbeat" last week to accompany the release of his new LP, "Libra Scale". Standout tracks come by way of his memorable "Triggamixes", this time re-imagining hits like Kanye West's "Runaway" and "Monster", Lil Wayne's "Right Above It", and even Diddy's "Hate Me Now", among others. DJ Quest (aka @TheUnderpaidDj) does his thing throughout; rare to hear a healthy dose of cuts and scratches on an R&B release. Chris Brown came with his best last week, but Songz proves he is the more mature of this generation's pop/R&B sensations...

Speaking of mature, holding down the Urban AC side of the mixtape game is Raheem DeVaughn (@368Hustlers) with his new tape "Jackin 4 Beats". His version of Lil Wayne's "Single" and the NSFW video that comes with it (pause) has gotten him some buzz, but the creativity doesn't end there. Radio Rah flips his own version of Kanye's "Runaway" and "Power" (man, with all these mixtape joints, Yeezy's got a definitive classic on his hands. Forget Rolling Stone, you heard it here kids), club hits "Turnt Up" and "No Hands", Chris Brown's "Deuces", and Red Cafe's "I'm Ill". The majority of original tracks feature production by Karma Music, bringing a classic, live band sound to counter the synths and samples found in the remakes. "Jackin 4 Beats" conjures up thoughts of breakbeats and battle raps, and although it's far from that, it certainly stands up against it's younger competition...

The highly anticipated "Armageddon" from Fred the Godson (@FREDTHEGODSON) is out, and with it comes the return of real rap lyricism. Not to say that the art is dead as a whole, but the world of gangsta rap specifically is definitely lacking in the creativity category. Fred's raspy vocals come with with hot verses throughout, and his swagger is unmistakable. Tracks like "Too Fat" and "So Crazy" could easily be singles on most rappers LPs, a scary thought considering there on a mixtape from an unsigned newcomer. He's is still spitting the same old "I got guns, I push weight" bravado, but at least he's packing it with dope punchlines and aggressive wordplay. I've got to give up to the producers on this one too; Jay-Z and Biggie samples make for memorable hooks on the two aforementioned tracks, and at times the explosive beats almost overtake the track, like on the bombastic "Murder 1". Almost. All in all, this is much more like a debut release from a cat that has obviously done his homework, and hopefully the beginning of a new era in rap...

Finally, I have to show some to love to New Jersey MC/Producer Yaya (@UncleYaYa2000JF) for his new mixtape "Yahzilla... The Movie", hosted by Sirius/XM's own DJ Caesar (@DJ_Caesar), and featuring the turntable wizardry of DJ Supa (@DJSupa). This is some of that good, old-fashioned, sit in your bedroom all night with a set of turntables, an MPC and a microphone hip-hop music the game is missing. Forget that, this isn't even part of "the game". This record is all about the love, the heart, and the soul of the music. Pete Rock himself gives a co-sign to set off the tape, and from there, scratchy samples, thoughtful lyrics, and dope cuts permeate the entire release, with Caesar's cooled out, slightly buzzed delivery leading you through a story of a mythical creature poised to engulf a city. The concept is quirky metaphor that allows the young MC to speak on everything from politics to video games in bedtime story fashion. Yaya doesn't make hip-hop because it's cool, or it will get him paid; he lives and breathes it every day, something most artists forget, if they ever knew it in the first place...

Chris Brown (@chrisbrown) is back on the scene with his new tape hosted by DJs Drama (@djdrama) and Babey Crew (@djbabeydrew), "In My Zone 2". After sampling Al Pacino's classic speech from "Scent of a Woman", where his character Frank Slade stands up for a young man's integrity, the young singer goes in on a hot track with help from Gucci Mane, "Ms. Breezy". The song doesn't have the same intensity as the introduction, coming with a typical "is she wifey material" plot, but sets off the tape nicely nonetheless. From there, Breezy brings his pop-infused R&B style to a bevy of dope beats, from the old school-inspired "F*ck Um All", to the trap music stylings of "Drop Rap", to the upbeat "Seen Her Naked". Big Sean and Kevin McCall are featured on a few tracks each, along with South Korean pop sensation Se7en. This was Mimi's Pick this past week, and it's easy to see why; Breezy is doing what he does best on this one, and is ready to retake his Prince of Pop status...

"Sing and Flow" is a short but sweet offering from two of the more mature R&B acts out right now, Estelle (@EstelleDarlings) and John Legend (@johnlegend). Jay Electronica's "Shiny Suit Theory" is the bed for the intro track; Estelle straight flows with her infectious British accent, while Legend comes with a verse that's as close as he's going to get to rapping. Talib Kweli helps out on "Freedom", a cool, swinging track laced with super-sped up samples and JL's signature piano riffs, "Hey Girl" trades pianos for violins while keeping a sampled-based hook, and "No Other Love" adds a reggae rhythm to John's smooth vocal stylings. All in all, this is more of a great holiday EP than a mixtape, something for you to cuddle up with that special someone to...

In his new book, "Decoded", Jay-Z (@S_C_) discusses in detail the meaning and inspiration for many of his songs, and to accompany it, Hetal Bhatt has compiled the "Decoded MIxtape". Now I googled Mr. Bhatt, and didn't find more than a LinkedIn profile and Facebook page with 139 friends, so I'm guessing he's not your typical mixtape provider, but he's made quite a name for himself for putting out a mixtape that has no host (actually a relief), no mixing whatsoever (would have been nice), and no original song selection (all tracks are mentioned in the book by Jay himself). Despite it's origin, this is a great mix of some of Jigga's best tracks, not necessarily the "hits". The "American Gangster" soundtrack is represented heavily, which to me is Mr. Carter's most innovative work, along with tracks like "D'Evils (produced by DJ Premier)", "Hell Yeah (featuring Dead Prez)" and the deep, Chris Martin (of Coldplay) assisted "Beach Chair". I would have liked to see someone in the hip-hop community get some shine off this collection (like, I don't know, me for example), but for those of us that aren't into greatest hits compilations and love to dive into a good story, this is the tape to cop...

Being from Boston, I've been a fan of Reks (@therealreks) for a minute. The Lawrence, MA emcee embodies real hip-hop to the fullest; inventive, aggressive wordplay over dirty samples, boom-bap beats and precise cuts and scratches. "In Between the Lines 2" shows that these elements are still alive and well in Reks' music, hosted by DJs Green Lantern (@dj_greenlantern), Statik Selektah (@statikselekt), and surprisingly enough, recent hip-pop mixtape master Ill Will (@deejayillwill). The 30-track tape features production from the likes of Ohno, Nottz, Moss, and Selektah himself, along with verses from Termanology, Phonte, Rass Kass, and Sha Stimuli. Too many dope joints to even get into; twist up a B or ride in the whip to this and you won't find yourself skipping a song. If you haven't heard Reks, this is a perfect introduction, and if you have, this is your reminder that the underground is still alive and well...

Finally, Carmelo Anthony (@carmeloanthony) makes his move into the hip-hop world with "Become Legendary", a mixtape released by his own Krossover Entertainment in conjunction with the release of his new shoe, the Jordan M7s. Melo enlists some heavy hitters on this one, with exclusive material from Bun B, Styles P, Ghostface, and N.O.R.E., as well as tracks by Nas, Cassidy, and even MC Lyte. The second half of the tape focuses on newcomers like Jody Breeze, Shawn Chrys, and Al Gator, showing that the Baltimore native is doing his hip-hop homework, or at least someone's doing it for him. The tape turns out to be a long advertisement for Melo's endeavors on and off the court, but at least he picked a good soundtrack...

Last week, Dipset's Jim Jones (@jimjonescapo) came through with DJ Scream (@DJSCREAM) and G-Unit's DJ Whoo Kid (@DJWhooKid) to drop "Capo Life". Jones is straight Harlem hood throughout, whether he's spitting over Jay-Z and Drake's "Light It Up", re-imagining Kanye's "Runaway" into a diss record about the controversial MC/producer, or going out west with Snoop Dogg and Rell on "Like Gangstas". Appearances from Roscoe Dash, and Gucci Mane fill out the roster on this one, along with Dipset members Cam'ron, Juelz Santana, and Vado. The result is a solid tape that stays true to Jones' formula and flows from beginning to end...

With release dates continually getting pushed back, fans are practically begging for a J. Cole (@JColeNC) LP. To settle some of that anticipation (or to add to it), The North Carolina MC dropped "Friday Night Lights", an epic mixtape that has been dubbed by some as "better than most albums". I can't really disagree; the 20-song release is sequenced perfectly, features mostly new material (with some recognizable tracks modestly added), no DJ, and hand-picked appearances. Cole is renowned for his skills on the mic as well as on the MPC, and although he does not disappoint in either category, the latter is what really shines here. The Roc Nation artist brings lush, evocative samples to every track, from the female choir in "Before I'm Gone", to the layered piano and synth on "In The Morning", to the Motown-infused "Love Me Not". Cole's production allows the music to be deep and thoughtful without getting too emotional or sappy, and his verses back that up with playful braggadocio mixed with a real down-to-earth personality. If this is a mixtape, expect big things from J.Cole when that full-length does come to fruition...

Taking it back to Harlem, Young Money's Jae Millz (@JAE_MILLZ) dropped "The Flood Never Ended" with DJs Ill Will and Rockstar. Millz brings a swagger that is unmistakably Uptown to a team that includes crossover hit-makers and street-bred rappers, sitting comfortably between too pop and too hood. Although he sounds a lot like the aforementioned Jones, Jae brings enough flavor to keep things interesting. Highlights include the club bangers "Go Fast" and "I Need A Drink (feat. Vado)", "Ride Away", with it's half-tempo soul flow, and the monumental "Remain In The Sky". It's also refreshing to hear something from the YM family that isn't overcrowded with features, showing that Millz can stand on his own two as an artist. Working alongside some of the biggest names in urban music right now, he'll have to just to get recognized...

Yung Joc (@IAMYUNGJOC) is back to his old tricks with "Swagg Team Mafia (The Movie)", mixed by DJ Dre (@IAMDJDREATL). Covers of "BMF" and "Hard In The Paint" set off the tape, and from there, Joc is not stingy with his recipe of hood-inspired hip-pop. "Groupies" borrows something old and something new, with it's pitched Lil Wayne hook and classically chill Stylistics sample. "Yeah Boy" (credited to the Swagg Team Mafia as a group) is trap music with some depth, boasting a big hook and subtle, violin-laced verses. "Do It Big (feat. The Game)" and "Hello" bring it back to the club, and "Baby, Baby" takes it to the next level with it's booty-house bounce. I don't think Joc is trying to be the G.O.A.T., but this tape shows that the man still has some hits...

Finally, we've got another entry from the Young Money family, in the form of Tyga's (@Tyga) "Well Done" with DJ Drama. OK, so Wayne is the vet, Drake is the crossover star, and Nicki is the much needed female component. Gudda Gudda is the hood/trap representative. and Jae Millz is his uptown counterpart. So where does Tyga fit in? From the jump it seems he's here to fill the Soulja Boy demographic. I feel it on from a business standpoint, but for this review? Doesn't look good. The youngest YM member touches "BMF", "Hard In The Paint", "Teach Me How To Dougie", and "Pretty Boy Swag". Yawn. Did I mention he sounds like Soulja Boy and Roscoe Dash mashed together (which I'm pretty sure is something that's happened in real life...)? The highlights come from DJ Activ, Tyga's tour DJ and battle veteran, adding some much needed technical ability in the form of dope, well-timed cuts and scratches. Why Drama has to talk during them is beyond me, but that's for another post...

Mack Maine (@mackmaine) dropped "The Laxative" this past week, attempting to translate his success as CEO of Young Money into rap prowess. The tape is hit-or-miss; Maine's laid back flow really only works on tracks backed-up by big name features. The production might have something do with it, with most tracks sounding like throw-aways and clones. Even the Timbaland-produced "My Reality", which features a catchy hook by Lil Wayne, sounds uncharacteristically bland for one the premier producers in the game today. Some of the hits include the anthemic, T-Pain and Snoop Dogg-assisted "Ghetto Commandments", and "Groundhog Day" featuring rap/rock group Mayday, newcomer Ghostwridah, and crossover hit-maker Cee-Lo. The latter is an upbeat, guitar and synth-driven track that sounds out of place on the tape, but is memorable nontheless. This track is what Weezy's "Rebirth" should have sounded like, rather than the poorly-produced, Avril Lavigne-inspired garbage that came out...

With "The Crazies 2", Drag-On (@OfficialDragOn) returns to reclaim his Ruff Ryders status with veteran rap tastemaker DJ Self (@djself). After a couple of intense bangers, Drag brings his whisper-flow to "Death Before Dishonor", where he lets us know he's still got love for DMX, and the Eminem and Lil Wayne hit "Drop The World", which he flips into an anthem for his new team, Hood Environment. The Araabmusik-produced "Body Bag" mingles classic piano and string samples with quirky synths and a trunk-worthy bassline, and "He's A Beast" features Mims and Mr. Limp on another window-shaker. Definitely creative production on this release, with beats from Slaughterhouse to Usher to Nicki Minaj rounding out the tape, with the verses to back it up...

Although Xzibit (@xzibit) has been out of the mainstream spotlight since his appearances on the seminal album "2001" by Dr. Dre, the Likwit Crew member has been steadily releasing good hip-hop music to his devoted fans. To bring in a new audience, X enlisted DJ/Producer Statik Selektah (@statikselekt) for his new mixtape, "MMX". The tape brings together essential hits from Xzibit's 15-year career and fresh tracks with old friends and newcomers. The classics are all there; "What U See Is What U Get" (personally one of my favorite hip-hop tracks of all time), "Pussy Pop" featuring Method Man and Jayo Felony (I wore out my DJ Rectangle mix CD listening to this track back in the day... whatcha know about that), and of course Dre classics like "What's The Difference" and "Bitch Please". X's new joints don't stray from the hardcore west coast sound he helped create; "It's Whatever" brings together B-Real, Jadakiss, Uncle Murda and Young Dre over a grimey, distorted synth, while Statik brings his signature sample-based production along with wordsmiths Termanology and Cassidy to "Goin Back". The result is not only a history lesson into the catalog of a modern hip-hop pioneer, but verification of Xzibit's dedication to hip-hop culture...

Miss Mimi's pick this week was "Don't Feed Da Killaz 3" by Chicago's own LEP Bogus Boys (@LEPBOGUSBOYS) mixed by DJ Drama (@DJDRAMA). Released on Halloween, this tape is definitely made for late-night rides looking for tricks and giving out treats. Features from Fabolous, Gucci Mane, and Jeremih bring some big name credibility, along with production from Drumma Boy, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. and DJ Toomp. These cats spit with an indelible style that only comes from years of rocking the mic. There is a difference between an MC and a rapper, and in the gangsta rap world, most become the latter. LEP Bogus Boys are the exception...

Joe Budden (@JoeBudden) is back with Volume 4 of his "Mood Musik" series, and with this one, the name definitely fits the content. I was at HeadQCourterz Studios back in February when I first heard the introductory track, "Pray For Me", and discussions of where the nearly five minute track with an iconic sample (Van Halen's "Right Now") could land on an album. The result sets the tone for the highly introspective mixtape, and he doesn't let up there. Touching on topics from baby mamas to drug use to fame, Budden takes the grown man approach to each topic, discussing the truths in each dilemma, regardless of the emotional outcome. Not many MCs have the courage to spit a line like, "half the time I'm arrogant, half the time I vengeful/sometimes it's to convince me, sometimes it's to convince you", serving as an accurate and humble slogan for modern hip-hop braggadocio. It's not all soul-searching though; Budden fills in the blanks with some memorably funny skits, and appearances from Fabolous, Lloyd Banks, Styles P, as well as fellow Slaughterhouse members Royce the 5'9" and Crooked I. Joe's not looking for radio hits here, but he's definitely making music people can relate to...

For those of you not in the NY-metro area, DJ Superstar Jay's (@DJSuperstarJay) "Salute Me (The Lost Tapes)" is something to check out. A tribute to the late Stack Bundles, Jay shows why the late Far-Rockaway MC was thought to be New York's next big thing before his untimely death in 2007. Jay drops crate digger classics ("Dirt on the Record", "Neva Could Say Goodbye") and club hits ("It's On Now", "I Don't Know What You Gone Do") side-by-side, showing Bundles versatility and love for all forms of the culture. Whether this is your introduction to Stack Bundles, or you're a long-time fan, you have to pay respect to an artist who's life was ended too early...

J.Period (@jperiodbk) has always been an interesting cat to me. Black Thought (@TariqTrotter) is one of the most slept-on MCs of our generation. Put them together and you get "Live Mixtape (Illadelph Edition)", an interesting mix of a live performance, DJ set, and freestyle session. Recorded at Toronto's The Manifesto concert in September of this year, the show finds Black Thought spitting classic Roots verses along side revamped versions of classics from Slick Rick, Gangstarr, and Rakim, to modern joints from Drake and Jay-Z. Thought has always been a hip-hop historian and it shows here, interpreting the cadences of many of the original tracks to his own accord. J.Period also does his thing, reworking verses and choruses to fit the mural, all while staying within the context of keeping the crowd hyped and interested. I'm always down for innovative, unique releases, and this tape is the epitome of both...

Finally, the CMJ (@CMJNetwork) festival was this past week, and with it came a bunch of underground acts from every genre of music you could think of. DJs Dutchmaster and Element come from the place where it's pop to be underground, Boston, MA, to drop "The Official CMJ Mixtape". First off, let me say that this tape features actual DJing: cutting, scratching, juggling, not a lot of BS on the mic; the type of stuff I hear on maybe 2% of mixtapes out today. Not only that, but these two back up their own skills with tracks from some of the nicest MCs out right now. Newcomers Emilio Rojas and Yelawolf combine forces on "Turn It Up" (prod. by DJ Green Lantern), Skyzoo and !llmind come through with help from Heltah Skeltah on "Burn Notice", and Ill Bill teams up with his Coka Nostra mates on "Kill Devil Hills". Amongst the big names, one track stands out in my eyes, coming from Boston rapper XL (@XLBoston) and produced by The Arcitype (@TheArcitype), titled "Scam Adams". XL sets off the track by saying "I don't normally come out for stuff like this... but I had to" and proceeds to rip apart a certain wannabe pop-star who claims Boston, but is from Connecticut. It's like the musical version of my recent mixtape review, with more cursing. Worth a listen on it's own, check it out on XXL. Whoo Kid, are you listening...

The phote shoot was shot in Malibu, California by famed photog's Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. "It's the first time I have worked with my kids in that way," Lopez says in the new issue of Us Weekly. "It was a totally special experience." And to talk about a chip off the old Jenny from the block -- Lopez was quoted saying her daughter is already a budding fashionista. "Emme picks out her own outfits and likes to sleep in her princess dress," she says. And her son? "It's hard to get Max dressed. He prefers to run around the house with no clothes on."

While some say Lopez is exploiting her children by way of the rich and famous. I say the family fortune is steady growing, so you haters need to get like J.Lo. The Gucci kids line -- set to debut in November -- will include apparel, footwear, and accessories.

Raz-B called in to Miss MiMi’s show on G-Unit Sundays on Shade 45, and poured his heart out about the whole Chris Stokes and Marques Houston allegations. After Miss MiMi goes through the history of success Raz-B has had in the music industry, he reveals that Chris Stokes began touching him when he was 13 and he had sex with Chris Stokes’ partner, Katrina, when he was 14, then Marques Houston penetrated him when he was 15.

When asked if Chris Stokes penetrated him he responded:

“Everybody thought that Chris Stokes put his penis in my bootyhole, that never happened. Chris wanted me to do it to him and then Marques Houston did it to me before.”

Raz-B said he won’t speak on any members of B2K or Omarion, but did say he saw a lot of things. He addresses the retraction tape that he made taking everything back, and said he wasn’t in the position to come forward but now he is. He also says his evidence is Ray J and Quindon Tarver.

Miss MiMi asked Raz-B if the whole Bishop Eddie Long accusations made him come forward about victims of abuse, and he concedes that it bothered him, and he was also inspired by seeing Tyler Perry on Oprah. He says he was abused between the ages of 13-17. He said the molestations happened about once a month, because Immature was traveling their own way, and Marques only penetrated him twice. Then he said:

“Chris is my cousin and he always wanted to suck my d*ck and he wanted me to f*ck him…Chris want it all the time. Whenever I could get a way of saying no I said no.”

Raz-B said Chris Stokes used to control who their girlfriends were and their sex lives, and tell them how women would slow them down. They would talk to their girlfriends about once a week for 30 minutes.

When asked if he enjoyed the sex, Raz-B responded:

“I never wanted to believe that that was right and that that felt good.”

He said he wants to speak for the kids who can’t speak for themselves.

“The car my mama got right now, they paid for and they bought it off. I said you could take my car back from me, you could take my brother’s car back from me because we all had a meeting, it was me, Zab Judah, Mike Concepcion was there – he was the mediator, Chris Stokes, Chris Owens, Jerome Jones who is Romeo from Immature, Marques Houston, Omarion, they were all there. So Mike Concepcion bought Chris in the room, Chris sat right there across his leg like a bitch and said ‘I’ll do whatever my godfather tells me to do.’ From that day, Chris put me in an apartment, they got me evicted out my apartment, they gave me some cars. I already knew what was going on but my thing was I was always trying to show compassion, I was never trying to make it, cuz I’m like these n*ggas is really trying to make me to be stupid…my brother was like where is my little brother at. They basically took me to Compton and had me do a retraction tape so I would look stupid to the whole world.”

Raz-B said they gave him $10,000 the day he did the retraction tape but they took so much money from him throughout his career it was nothing. He said he’s not God and revenge is the lord’s, he just wants to clear his name and set the record straight.

Oddly enough, his album is called B2K Records Presents “Raz-B: Follow My Lead.”

The BET Hip Hop Awards were last week, and to set off the festivities DJs Green Lantern (@dj_greenlantern), Holiday (@djholiday), and Kutthroat (@djkutthroat) came through with their "Invasion" mixtape. New York is repped hard on this one, with a bunch of appearances from D-Block and the newly-reformed Dipset crew, along with southern hit makers Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy, and Waka Flocka Flame. Not much from the west coast on this one; I guess everyone is waiting for Dr. Dre's "Detox" to drop before they go crown a new king of G-Funk...

Speaking of D-Block, DJ Killa Touch (@DJKILLATOUCH) came through with a tape from R&B newcomer Josh Xantus (@JOSHXANTUS), titled "Josh X-Files". Setting it off with a live version of Jamie Foxx's "Blame It", Josh shows off his skills on the keys and with his voice, all while forgetting the words and admitting "this is what happens when you don't sleep". The second track starts with an interview with Shade 45's Angela Yee, where you can practically hear her getting wet in anticipation of his voice. From there, X easily flips between slow jams, party music, and street hits, and it doesn't hurt that he's got features from the likes of Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, and Red Cafe either. What's seems to be missing is the Statik Selectah-produced, Ghostface-assisted "I Don't Care", which in my opinion could easily be the R&B jam of the year. What's good Killa...

Cassidy (@CASSIDY_LARSINY) has a new record on the way, and in preparation dropped a new tape, "Just call me C.A.S.H." with DJ Hood. Cass goes back to the classic mixtape ethos of spitting verses over well-known bangers, with just a few original tracks. He goes in on everything from Cam and Vado's "Speaking Tongues" to Snoop's "I Wanna Rock" to 50 Cent's "I Get Money", just to name a few. In terms of originals, "Paper Touchin" is a certified banger featuring Red Cafe, Fabolous, Fat Joe, and Jadakiss, with it's grimy melody and battle-style one-upsmanship. Cassidy keeps his ear to the streets, and definitely knows his hip-hop history...

DJ Kay Slay (@realdjkayslay) is back again with "Long Live the King", with his usual lineup of hit-makers on deck. It's a whos-who of New York heavyweights, with tracks from Papoose, Lloyd Banks, Raekwon, Redman, and N.O.R.E. Slay also shows love to the new school, with appearances from Reek da Villain, Fred the Godson, and Vado. Besides the obvious stand outs (Banks' "Start It Up", Redman's "Tiger Style"), a couple of joints towards the end caught my ear. "No Way Back" by St. Laz (@StLaz) featuring Nucci Reyo (@thekingskidreyo) is a grimy street hit remembering "hip-hop moments" from their lives, from fighting off would-be muggers to playing with their first sampler. It's a track about their first love, music, and how it got them through the toughest times. Another one is "Bastard Child" by singer Troubleman. Raekwon sets off the anthemic beat with a hot verse, but when Troubleman goes in, it takes it to a new level. He reminds me of a modern Ron Isley (yes, Mr. Biggs himself), with his smooth vocal and street mentality. Big up to Kay Slay for putting together a nice collection of hits on this one...

Finally is a tape from the newest edition of the G.O.O.D. Music family, Cyhi Da Prynce (@CyhiDaPrynce). "Royal Flush" is more like a free album than a mixtape, with no DJ (more MCs and rappers should do this, as your DJ really ain't doing sh*t but dropping tags at the beginning of your songs anyway), no features (except for the last track, "So Appalled", which brought Cyhi into the spotlight and features Kanye, RZA, Jay-Z, Pusha T, and Swizz Beatz), and focuses on original production. I was not expecting the deep mood music you get from this release, with songs about living fast ("Fast Lane"), revenge ("Bunch of Rounds"), and looking for wifey ("Can't Find Love"). Cyhi is bringing that cool southern-style to Kanye's new group, and from the sound of it, should be getting a lot of fellow southern artists to step their game up...

DJ Self (@djself) and Bad Boy Records came through this past week with "The Money Pit 2" from newcomer Aasim (@aasimtheanswer). According to Self, the Queens-bred MC "has the industry... [and] the streets on lock", and is prepared to prove it. Diddy (@iamdiddy) blesses a couple of certified bangers on the tape; "Feel Stronger", and the Foreigner-sampled "Breath of New York", but beyond that, you won't find too many big name features on this release. Aasim is confident on his own two, flipping between styles, tempos, and sub-genres with the ease of a seasoned pro. Among plenty of real New York hip-hop you'll find tracks varying from southern-infused funk ("Rise & Fall"), to smooth R&B ("Maybe"), to reggae/rock ("Money & Sex"), all with a distinctly Queens vibe. I'm not about to say Aasim is the second coming of Nas, but he certainly has the lyrics to put him in contention...

Now for the other end of the spectrum. Rapper Gudda Gudda's (@imguddagudda) new mixtape "Live From da Gudda" is heavy on features, repetitive in production, and short on memorable verses. The more well-known members of Young Money make their necessary cameos, as do Waka Flocka Flame, Wale. and T-Pain (to name just a few). In fact, there is not one track that does not feature another artist, and Gudda's raps get lost in the melee. The production sits at a standard 75 bpm (give or take) throughout the tape, with the 808s and pitched hi-hats that come standard with the "trap music" sound. Highlights come from already-hits "YM Salute" and a mashup of Mariah Carey's "Up Out My Face" with the pop hit "Bedrock". It's disappointing that with the musical and media genius of Wayne, Nicki, and Drake around him, Gudda comes with such a performance, but maybe it's all part of the plan...

Fiend is out of prison and back to reinvent himself with his new tape "Audio Dope", and the music definitely lives up to the name. The former No Limit soldier goes hard on mixtape standards "Hard In The Paint" and "Exhibit C", updates his old label's sound on "Motor in the Back" and "Don't Talk, Do It", and even jumps on Raekwon's classic "Incarcerated Scarfaces". But to me, the real audio dope is in the old, soulful samples found in tracks like "Flyin' Iron" (feat. Curren$y), "Tulan Wave", and "Cool Like That". I don't f*ck with syrup, but if I did, this is what I'd listen to. Fiend keeps it hood no matter what he's spittin on, but it's good to hear that he's back with a passion for making good music...

Mimi's Pick of the Week was DJ Whiteowl's (@djwhiteowl) Dipset Reunion 2, hosted by JR Writer (@ThisisJRWriter). The 34-track tape gives equal shine to original members Cam'ron (@Mr_Camron), and Jim Jones (@jimjonescapo), along with newcomer Vado (@vado_mh). What's missing is a good supply of Juelz Santana (@thejuelzsantana) joints. The hood banger "Salute" is on the tape early, which features him, but beyond that, I hear more from Hell Rell than the man behind hits like "Mic Check" and "The Whistle Song". This is no slight to Whiteowl, but maybe a sign as to the real condition of the hip-hop super-group. With an official announcement from JR of a Dipset tour to end the tape, we will see...

Finally, my pick goes to Joell Ortiz's (@JoellOrtiz) "The Ortiz Manifesto" with DJ O-Zone (@DJO_Zone). What can I say, this cat is keeping real hip-hop alive with every release. From the jump Ortiz pays homage to the classics with "Hip Hop 2010" and a demand that rappers "step on your white sunglasses...we don't wear those over here". The battle lines are drawn clear. From there Joell goes in, bringing it to the club ("Name of the Game" feat. M.O.P.), to emotional philosophizing ("Like I Know" feat. Novel), to the streets of BK ("Ask Me About Brooklyn" feat. Maino). And even amongst all this is grown-up hip-hop music, Ortiz features new arrivals to the game Vado, Corey Gunz, and French Montana on a couple tracks. Dude keeps it real like few others doing it right now. Don't sleep...

Young Jeezy came through this week with "The Last Laugh", a precursor to his official release "TM103". Jeezy does his thing throughout, setting it off with a huge crowd cheering over the title track, backed up by "Game Over", with it's big drumline beat and triumphant horns. Also included are his recent hits "All White" and "Jizzle", as well as appearances from Yo Gotti and Slick Pulla. Jeezy's dominating vocals seem to overcome the beat on many of the tracks, showing that he's here to spit, not show off his industry contact list. You have to give it to him for making music that's undeniably Jeezy in a time where producers often get more credit than the rapper...

Next up are a couple of joints from DJ Ill Will (@DeeJayiLLWiLL) and DJ Rockstar (@RealDJRockstar). Bow Wow (@BowWow) has come into his own as a media icon, and Greenlight 3 shows he's not about to stop with the formula that got him there. Borrowing elements from some new label-mates, "Talk That" comes complete Wayne-esque intro lighter flick, and "How I Feel" brings a laid-back, punchline-heavy flow a la Drake. The newest member of Young Money shows that he is not about to slow down, and at this point in his career, I've gotta respect the kid's hustle...

When I first heard Pleasure P (@pleasurep), I thought he'd be another R&B one-hit wonder. I will start by saying I was wrong. Maybe it's because he starts off "4 Ur Pleasure" with remakes of classics like Tupac's "All About U", Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff's "Summertime", and Biggie's "F*ckin You Tonight" (hey, I grew up on these tracks. Instant mixtape points). Maybe it's because I laughed at the premature ejaculation anthem "Already" (singers who take themselves too seriously take note). Maybe it's how he goes from the club ("I Mo Drink" feat. Lil Jon) to the streets ("For Da Hood" feat. Yo Gotti). OK, I'm going on about this cat a little bit, so let me put a big *PAUSE* right here, but P is just a kid that seems to be having fun making music...

The XXL-backed "I'm Better Than You" by Mickey Factz (@MickeyFactz) comes with much fanfare and does not disappoint. From beginning to end you can hear Mickey's varied influences, from classic sample-based hip-hop ("Empty Bottle"), to new wave ("Melodic Nightmares"), to slick dance-pop ("Mona Lisa" feat. Chester French and Kara Rose). Mickey even produces a couple tracks on the tape, rounding up many of these sounds into a cohesive package. Features include B.O.B., Big K.R.I.T., Bun B and Fat Joe, and the song "Amnesia" brings in production from the French electro duo Justice. With a chameleon-like approach to his music, and "The Achievement" full-length on the way, Factz is ready to break down doors...

Sheek Louch (@REALSHEEKLOUCH) is undoubtably the unsung hero of the super-group The Lox, but this time he has teamed up with DJ Green Lantern (@DJ_GREENLANTERN) to show he is a force to be reckoned with on his own. "Donnie Def Jam" goes hard throughout; this has to be the first mixtape I've listened to in a while where I didn't skip one song. Cohorts Styles P (@therealstylesp) and Jadakiss (@therealjadakiss) make their inevitable appearances, but what might be the mixtape track of the year is the Scram Jones-produced "This Hip Hop", featuring Termanology, Joell Ortiz and some classic beats for good measure. It's an ode to the art, a banger made for the heads that truly live the culture...

In the cover story, Campbell says she can relate to the persona she portrayed in the pictorial.

“I have to learn from my mistakes. And a lot of the ones I’ve made have been public. So I always get nervous when people speak about something that sounds like a role model, because I don’t know if I’ve been a great role model myself."

Campbell’s bad-girl persona is tapped in the Interview photo spread shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. In one shot, she wears a form-fitting black leather dress, a gold dog collar-style choker and cuff-like, thumb only black leather gloves — revealing bright red nails — that frame the face of a nude male model, whose mug is bloodied and body is wounded.

Later in the article, Campbell credits her fellow ’90s supermodels Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista with opening doors for her in the fashion world.

“Honestly, for me it was a blessing to have a friend like Christy. I had to set this week off with "Viva La Hova", the ambitious mixtape from Mick Boogie (@MickBoogie) and Terry Urban (@TerryUrban). Originally released in 2008, these cats pulled in a slew of hot producers including 9th Wonder, 6th Sense and Needlz among others to remix (not mashup) songs from two of the biggest names of this generation: Jay-Z and Coldplay. What comes out is a sometimes dark, sometimes bouncy re-imagining of the two act's most memorable tunes. Everyone should instantly recognize "Life of Clocks", which brings Coldplay's "Clocks" to the club underneath Jay's verses from "Party Life", while "Lucifer and Friends" replaces Kanye's production on "Lucifer" with dreamy guitars and sped up vocals from Coldplay's Chris Martin. The album/mixtape has been remastered for the re-release, DJ drops have been removed and includes two new tracks. With Jay-Z and Coldplay performing together in Las Vegas for New Year's this year, and co-signs from both camps, this may be a taste of what's to come...

Next is the short, appropriately titled "Buy My Album", from mixtape machine Gucci Mane (@gucci1017) and DJ Holiday (@djholiday). I'll be honest: I had never heard of Billy Becks (@billybecks) until Miss Mimi told me about his new mixtape, "It's All About Me". Hosted by one of my favorites, DJ Thoro, this tape is about real MCin and DJin (from your own mind, ya know?!). With dreams of a pro football career marred by injuries, Becks has focused on hip hop, and doesn't disappoint. Going off on everything from classic Rakim ("I'm Goin In") to trappin' music ("Bad Mutha F*cka") to the hot club hits ("Everybody Thuggin"), Billy comes correct on this tape. And if you thought real DJs were dead in the mixtape game (I do sometimes...), Thoro is juggling and scratching (you know, the sound turntables make when you move the record back and forth? On last Sunday's show, Mimi and I got into it about Novel (@IamNovel) and his new mixtape "Legato Blues Summer". I personally love it; she says he's gotta step his game up. With that said I know she hasn't listened to this, cause dude is rapping, singing, and producing, a trifecta that very few can pull off and he's doing it right. From flipping Jay Elect's "Exhibit A" into a hood R&B joint, to the country-tinged guitars of "Velvet Sky", Novel shows his influences while sounding a lot like a young D'Angelo. I personally like his singing over his rapping (can't say the same for most others that do both), and granted his voice could be a little more powerful, but in his defense it sounds like homegrown mixes and not the glossy studio magic we're all accustomed to. Maybe we can change Mimi's opinion next time Novel comes through Shade 45...

It's officially post NY Fashion Week. But if you haven't been to fashion week there are so many ways that you can find yourself missing out. Here's a couple of things to keep in mind as you navigate your way through the fashionable concrete jungle:

1. Keep a Charge or Die.

This is very important. You will find yourself e-mailing to RSVP to various events around the city or calling to conduct interviews and having a dead phone will not work.

2. Heels to Flats...Flats to Heels...or Kicks.

It's no secret that the NY blocks are long so walking in heels to the fashion show could leave your feet in blisters; which is not a good. Be sure to bring your flats in an extra bag or your favorite sneakers, to be that more special.

3. Paper & Pen...Old School

In the world where electronics rule the world it is still important to have a pen and paper handy. When you're in a rush and need to write down an address or quick email address and can't do so because your phone is frozen, this will be a miracle.

4. The Business.

So what do you do? What company do you work for? This is a huge question that can be answered with a simple hand gesture and a Business Card. Make sure you have plenty and also talk about your company. Handing out a business card is just the product of everything, tell us about yourself.

5. Network and Followup.

Although you are there to do coverage, networking is essential but after leaving it is a must to followup. Email immediately and make notes of where you met the person. Make a memorable impression.

*Note all of these tips come from personal experiences. I've even had to unplug a freezer in a bodega to plug my phone up to charge. I tried to plug the freezer back up and let's just say there is a whole lot of melted ice cream.

Up for grabs at eBay is an extremely rare 1964 Pontiac Banshee Firebird prototype car, which was created by John Z. Delorean, then General Manager of Pontiac. One of the only two surviving concept cars, the Pontiac XP-833 Banshee Coupe was commissioned by General Motors to compete with the Ford Mustang. The public debut of the XP-833 Banshee was canceled just hours before the 1964 New York Auto Show for the reason that the Banshee Firebird wouldn’t threaten the sales of Corvette sports car. Anyway, in 1967, Pontiac did introduce the Firebird that shared both chassis and sheet metal with the Chevrolet Camaro. In 1973 John Delorean left General Motors and formed the DeLorean Motor Company to create his dream sports car, the DeLorean, which has been featured in the movie Back to the Future.
The Banshee never went into production, but the two drivable Banshee prototypes survived even after the project was canceled by GM. These concept cars were sold by GM to employees closely involved in the XP-833 project. The one-of-a-kind prototype coupe up on eBay was sold directly by GM to Bill Killen

He should have just invited her to his crib since they were right across the street from his 1/2 million condo. While he apparently showered in this 5star hotel, KS stood in the mirror with her robe half open with her cell phone in tow video taping herself straight shitting on Souljboy saying he was a coke head, his dick was limp etc. She then walked over to the dresser where there appeared to be three lines of pure white cocain. Now we may not have seen this fuckery going on or know if the powder was real or if the video was somehow enhanced in her favor. The fact remains Souljaboy was in the company of A industry chick who has let it be known on several occasions that for what ever reason she's out to destroy these rap niccas careers.

Now that Souljaboy has been exposed he has taken to his TWITTER account saying silly things like "God knows I didn't do that" and "thank you to my real fans for your support" The burden falls on Souljaboy in part b/c KS is known for her devious tactics. Maybe it was his "MONEY" that made him feel as if he was exempt from getting royally fucked by a voucher such as KS.

Now if you want to look at it from KS point of view, I'm quite sure ole' girl feel like these industry cats are trying to use and expolite her for their personal desires. While this chick is being taught to look at these rappers as animals, lames, fuck niccas, or just to put it simple garbage that needs to be thrown out. Yeah she has gotten snuffed, knocked down and kicked around which has began to feel like love taps. She has learned who and who not to fuck with, what she hasn't learned is that at this point in the game money and time is of the essence for some of these cats and she will find herself well not her her moms who is also pushing her into pure RATCHNESS, WILL BE IDENTIFYING HER AT THE DADE COUNTY MOURGE.

"The reason I'm in a wheel chair is because I have sharp pains since I was in the hospital and a lil bit before," he said. "I have sharp pains when I'm walking and literally I want to collapse but I can't I have to continue to walk. So my right leg has been acting kinda funny. I still have a lil' mobility, I can still stand up in the booth...but I'd rather the mobility of my legs be jeopardized than my musicality be jeopardized at any given point of time."

“The Black Book,” was initially set to be released in 2003 by Jay Z in conjunction with The Black Album but Jay pulled the plug because it allegedly contained personal things he wasn’t ready to release to the world.
Those feelings have obviously passed and he is ready to reveal parts of his life. Decoded, is presumed to be a “best-seller,” no surprise there. The 336-page book is dated to be released November 16, 2010.

Ok so Kanye West has released his video for POWER!! I think the video is absolutely amazing and I feel him completely! The director and Kayne West both consider the video a "The Portrait of Power" and it does play out like a moving painting! I just wish it was longer.....Well amazing concept! I love the director he captured "Power"

The Director says--

Marco Brambilla, who directed the video, recently told Vulture that the theme of "Power" was a fall from grace; a visual metaphor for his high-profile plummet last year after stealing the mic from Taylor Swift at the VMAs.
